SINO ANG CHUMORVA KAY MAGELLAN?
SINO ANG CHUMORVA KAY MAGELLAN?
By Stanley Palisada
“Sino ang CHUMORVA kay Magellan?” asks University of Asia and the Pacific History professor Alvin Campomanes. History teachers these days go to lengths (and even gimmickry) to make history appealing to students whose interest span is as short as a soap bubble’s life.
“And then my students laugh and I get their attention. I do it not because I just want to make it funny but that way naka-connect ako sa estudyante,” justifies Campomanes.
By the way the answer to the question would be Lapu-Lapu, not the fish. Who is Lapu-Lapu is another story buried in the mythical yesteryears of this country where the rest of our history and heroes lie in state. Revisiting dates, places and names is not the coolest thing when you’re a teenager oozing with hormones and trapped in a 1 p.m. History class under a teacher whose previous career was reading the “Cenaculo.”
The way history is generally taught in schools has led (partly) to the untimely demise of interest in History itself. An insipid teaching style and poor retention of students are the outlying reasons why interest in history is history.
A recent survey on heroes that we conducted drew a handful of the most far-fetched historical tidbits from today’s youth. A respondent said (very confidently) that Andres Bonifacio led flag-raising and Independence Day ceremonies in Cavite, an ignorant credit grab from Emilio Aguinaldo who was the one who held the flag and not the bolo.
Another respondent said Emilio Aguinaldo is “ang taong nasa pera” and that’s as far as he knows in spite of his being a college freshman and having survived his elementary and high school history classes.
A Philippine historian, Michael Xiao Chua explains that confusion results when kids are taught to memorize historical facts alone. History is not a “fill in the blanks, fill up the calendar” undertaking. Like Journalism it’s equally important to know the “hows and the whys”, aside from the whos, whats, wheres, and whens. The hows and whys provide meaning to events.
“Ang History ay salaysay na may saysay,” says 24-year old Chua who is also the vice president of the Philippine Historical Association in spite of his youth.
But lackluster teaching to an uninspired student is not to blame entirely. It is also pitiable that preoccupation with survival and the rush to overcome poverty make many see history a whim fit only for those who have spare time or resources.
According to Philippine historian, Celestina Boncan PhD, Filipinos can be on the road to greatness if they know their journey. “It’s as if history is an intangible that cannot fill up the stomach or cannot wipe hunger. But learning or understanding history is the spirit that would drive our people to become great,” Boncan said.
It’s been a while since we allowed our heroes to inspire us to love our country the way they did. We hailed them during the 2000 Centennial Celebrations but forgot all about them after the party.
And how can we love a country we don’t know?
Lastly, History is learning the past, and learning from the past.
Why do we as a country, stay trapped in a cycle of poverty, corruption, and bad governance? Why do we keep missing the lessons of the years that came and went?
It’s because in our journey, we Filipinos are engrossed with today and the future, that we don’t look back. In so doing, we’re merely walking in circles.*

From EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue?
abs-cbnNEWS.com
Posted at 11/24/2011 5:33 PM | Updated as of 11/24/2011 5:36 PM
mula sa: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/metro-manila/11/24/11/corys-uncle-helped-rename-edsa-highway-54
MANILA, Philippines – Not many Filipinos remember but it was an uncle of the late former President Corazon Aquino who pushed for the renaming of Highway 54 into Epifanio delos Santos Avenue.
Carmen Suva is the granddaughter of Filipino scholar Epifanio delos Santos.
She said Aquino’s uncle, Rizal Rep. Juan Francisco Sumulong, helped sponsor a bill pushing for the renaming of the highway after the scholar, journalist and historian from Malabon. The bill was approved on April 7, 1959 and became Republic Act 2140.
“The irony of that, si Don Juan [Francisco] Sumulong na tiyuhin ni tita Cory na siya ang nagpipilit na ipangalan kay Epifanio delos Santos ang EDSA,” Suva told ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda."
EDSA significance
While Aquino’s contributions to the country cannot be dismissed, historian Jonathan Balsamo from the Philippine Historical Association said changing the name of EDSA at this point in history would be hard.
Balsamo explained that the Filipino people already have some affinity to the name EDSA. He said thousands of Filipinos gathered on EDSA during the 1986 People Power revolution to remove President Ferdinand Marcos from power.
Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman echoed Balsamo’s opinion on the issue.
He recognized the noble motives of Bohol Rep. Rene Relampagos, author of House Bill 5422 which seeks to change the name of the 24-kilometer road, but said “such good intentions cannot justify the alteration of history.”
“EDSA must not be changed as it is a constant reminder to the tyrannical tendencies of national leaders, now and in the future, and to uphold at all times the supremacy of the Constitution and the ascendency of the rule of law,” he said.
Heritage Act of 2009
Carminda Arevalo, officer-in-charge of the Research, Publications and Heraldy Division of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), noted that the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009 already considers EDSA, being over 50 years old, a “historical street”.
The law states that historical street names “shall not be allowed to be renamed by a local or national legislation, unless approved by the National Historical Institute, and only after due hearing on the matter.”

Seminar on Risk and Disaster Management for Cultural Institutions
Announcement from the Ortigas Foundation
Insider’s Guide to Risk and Disaster Management for Cultural Institutions: A Seminar
December 1, 2011
8am-5pm
Php 1500.00 (includes meals, kit and certificate)
On December 1, the Ortigas Foundation Library and Lopez Memorial Museum will hold a one-day seminar on Risk and Disaster Management for Cultural Institutions. Open to libraries, museums, galleries and members of the public who undertake the task of maintaining cultural heritage, the seminar has a registration fee of Php1500.00.
The Philippines is ranked fourth among countries with the most number of casualties brought about by disasters as well as man-made calamities, and third in the UN’s Disaster Risk Index. Apart from the lives lost, records in the form of documents, photographs, artifacts etc that embody the tangible cultural heritage become victims to these events. ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) encourages that these be incorporated into existing risk and disaster management plans to ensure their survival during and after the disasters. Lectures and exercises to be given by Ma. Victoria Herrera and Peter Natividad of the Mind Museum and the Lopez Memorial Museum respectively focus on these.
The Ortigas Foundation Library is located at the 2nd floor of Ortigas Building, Ortigas corner Meralco Avenues, Pasig City. Library days and hours are Mondays to Saturdays, 8:30-6pm , except holidays. For more information on the seminar, please call 631- 2417 and 631- 1231 locals 222 and 228 or email admin@lopez-museum.org or ortigasfoundation@ortigas.com.ph.

– Suzette Doctolero
“For a historical fiction-based story that has never been tried on Philippine television before, it’s daring in terms of epic scope. Meaning, even if the central love story or drama is fiction, everything surrounding it is based on history – from culture, customs, demeanor to look.” - Direk Mac Alejandre
Mamayang gabi, mapanood na ng buong bansa ang pinakahihintay na epikserye ng GMA7 na AMAYA na inilarawan bilang "the most expensive and grandest show that the Kapuso Network is producing" at kinilala bilang " the one that would revolutionize the landscape of Philippine TV".
Malaking produksiyon. Pinagkagastusan. Makasaysayan.
Re amaya---ive wanted to do a historical fiction na ang setting ay pre hispanic philippines. :P
Note: Bisaya. Kabisayaan.
So i dont think me problema tayo.
O historical talaga. We always say na historical fiction siya. Malinaw iyan.
“The binukot episodes will only run for a week or so Not more than 2 weeks) where the young amaya is being thought how to weave, chant epics (hence the use of Hinilawod-- mula sa Panay uli, in its original language---hopefully di macut--- now young Amaya reciting the Hinilawod. We used all written materials from different parts ng Visayas and we weaved it in our story. Walang masama doon. For me to stick to only one island in the Visayas is to limit myself sa existing materials or records ng pre hispanic Visaya. Masyadong limiting yun. The point is, to use all available material sa buong Visayas at gamitin sa kwento.
3) Tara Reyes (Bagong Kasaysayan, Inc.): Friends, pls. watch Amaya on may 30 GMA channel 7.
Kaya maraming manunuod
5) Xiao Chua (De La Salle University History Department): BINUKOT ANG CODE NAME KO PARA SA MAGANDA AT MAPUTING BABAE.
